Steel does not melt and collapse on itself
With pressures applied correctly, anything can cut anything. Think of a waterjet machine, it uses a high pressure stream of water to cut steel. So while you are correct that aluminum could not cut steel in a conventional manner, it very well can in an unconventional manner. Not saying the planes could cut through whatever size those beams are, just saying that it is possible.
