Nevada Rancher Cliven Bundy Arrested by FBI, Charged with Assault and Conspiracy

Another Rancher Arrested

The so-called Sage Brush rebellion is a shorthand description of western state citizens who see their freedoms and their lands being encroached upon by the federal government.  The dispute flared up in 2014 when Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy and other ranchers protested when the federal government came in and attempted to take his cattle over a dispute of payments for grazing rights. The government has never forgiven Bundy for his audacity, and his two sons were also leaders in the standoff in Oregon last month.

Bundy went to Oregon this week to support his sons, and on Wednesday evening he was arrested and charged with conspiracy, assault on a federal officer, obstruction, and other crimes. It is exactly as one would expect the thuggish federal government to act, and it is certainly meant to be payback to Bundy for the embarrassment and potential rejection of government control that he represented. The charges were made pursuant to the conflict at his ranch back in 2014, but the timing allowed the government to make a statement of power and control by tying it to the standoff in Oregon.

The Bureau of Land Management said at the time of the 2014 standoff that Cliven Bundy owed over $1 million in fees and penalties for trespassing cattle on federal property without a permit over 20 years. Bundy refuses to acknowledge federal authority over public lands.

Make no mistake, his arrest is not about trespassing, it is about control and power. And coming at the same time as the defeat of the ranchers in Oregon, it is meant to tell the American people who really owns this nation… and it is not the American citizens.

Speaking earlier in the evening, Greg Bretzing, special agent in charge of the FBI in Oregon, said:

“It has never been the FBI’s desire to engage these armed occupiers in any way other than through dialogue, and to that end, the FBI has negotiated with patience and restraint in an effort to resolve the situation peacefully.”

“However, we reached a point where it became necessary to take action.”

More likely is the statement from Cliven Bundy, who said: ‘If I was armed, they’d kill me’
