Nazi Germany Survivor Warns the US: Obama May Stage Riots to Call Off Election

There is a tendency among Americans to assume that bad things that happened somewhere else “can’t happen here.” This relates particularly to political or economic upheavals. There’s sort of an unspoken confidence in the superiority of American institutions that flies under the radar, and assumes that there’s something wrong with other nations that make them susceptible to crises to which we are immune.

Kitty Werthmann moved to America from Austria in 1950.  She lived through the Nazi era and related in a recent interview how the elections of 1938 were postponed and why.  Recall that Austria was a very contemporary nation at that time, one with a well-developed Western culture.  Could what happened almost 80 years ago in Europe happen in America today?

Well, what happened by March 13th [1938], we were supposed to have an election to elect Hitler, and we had massive, massive riots, much worse than Ferguson and Baltimore.  Blocks and blocks and blocks of our big cities were burnt down.  And there were two political factions fighting each other.  On one side, the communist party was getting very powerful, and of course, the National Socialist Party, the Nazi Party, Hitler’s Party — they were fighting each other. And because of the riots, the government called off the election.

The interviewer interjected that during the time between March 13th and April 10th, Hitler occupied Austria.  Kitty then continued:

We had martial law. When we had the election [on April 10th], we elected Hitler by 98%.

The preservation of liberty requires vigilance.  Not paranoia, nor some obsessive belief that every event must be conspiracy-related or a precursor to disaster.  But a simple realization that America is not immune to political upheaval, and that not every politician is above engaging such upheaval as a path to power.
