National Review Publisher ‘Heartbroken’ After Cancellations Stemming from Trump Attack

National Review has earned a spot on Trump’s Twitter account, as he retaliated against the newest publication entitled, “Against Trump”.  In classic Trump fashion, he came out swinging with derision and criticism and his own style of righteous indignation.

Twenty-two conservative commentators have penned their opinions about Trump’s destruction of a conservative base, believing him to be riding the wave of anger and capitalizing upon it, but not the answer that America needs to solve looming problems.

Giving Trump some credit for exposing the divide between the grassroots and the Washington GOP.  The editors argue that if those in Washington cannot make a “compelling working-class agenda, the legitimate anxieties and discontents of the blue-collar voters will be exploited by demagogues.  We sympathize with many of the complaints of the Trump supporters about the GOP, but that doesn’t make the mogul any less flawed a vessel for them.”

Radio host Glenn Beck called Trump’s ascension “a crisis for conservatism,” while Weekly Standard editor William Kristol asks, “Isn’t Trumpism a two-bit Caesarism of a kind that American conservatives have always disdained? Isn’t the task of conservatives today to stand athwart Trumpism, yelling Stop?”

Ed Meese, former attorney general under President Ronald Reagan, laments that in a field of strong candidates with solid credentials of leadership, the rise of Trump meant “the political atmosphere is polluted by the vicious personal attacks” rather than a debate of ideas.

Meese concluded, “At a time when the nation is suffering under one of the most divisive and incompetent presidents in history, our people need positive, unifying leadership, not negative, destructive political rhetoric.”

Cal Thomas understands the justified anger however he too believes Trump is the wrong man for the job.

“Anger is not policy. Trump channels a lot of the righteous (and some of the unrighteous) anger of voters and sees the solution as himself. Isn’t a narcissist what we currently have in the White House?”

Take a look at this letter from Fowler regarding reaction to the National Review’s piece on the Trumpster:

Dear Friend,

Today is a big day for National Review. Our editors have made a very forceful defense of conservatism, of principle, and against the politics of attitude, in our editorial, Against Trump.

We have received angry calls, and cancel my subscription demands. One in particular broke my heart. Well, let’s hope time heals.

None of this was unexpected.

But: We have also received very strong expressions of support from many NR friends. People who believe and they are right to believe this that the main reason National Review exists is to do the very thing it is doing today.

Defending conservative principle. Defending it from being marginalized, or recast as emotion and bluster instead of as an expression of reason and intelligence.

On behalf of Rich Lowry and my colleagues, thank you for standing with us. Or, better, thanks for letting us stand alongside you as we embrace the Buckley mission: To stand athwart history, yelling stop.

Best,

Jack Fowler
