One of the strongest arguments against relocating enemy combatants incarcerated at the U.S. Naval Base at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba is that it would be dangerous to mix them with the general criminal populations in the United States.
Prisons across the United States and Europe have become hotbeds for the conversion and radicalization of terrorists over the last decade. Richard Reid, the “Shoe Bomber” was radicalized as a teen in a U.K. prison before attempting to blow up an American Airlines flight from Paris to Miami with explosives he had hidden in his shoes (hence, why you must remove your shoes at airport security now).
More recently, Alton Nolen beheaded a female coworker at an Oklahoma food processing plant. Nolen was attempting to behead a second coworker when the plant's COO shot and wounded him. Nolen–who now goes by the name Jah'Keem Yisrael–converted to Islam while serving time in an Oklahoma prison.
Recently, workers at a jail in central England reported that not only is the facility being used as a radicalization hotspot, but an entire block of Gartree Prison is now essentially under Sharia law.
