Military Rejects 80 Percent of Applicants As Armed Forces Shrink

The days are gone when just about anyone could walk into a recruiter’s office and sign up for the military – whether it be to help pay for college or get themselves ‘straightened out’ for some personal issue they have or trouble with the law.

The Pentagon estimates that only about 25% of applicants are now qualified.

“Five years ago, if a kid had gotten caught with a (marijuana) joint in his car, that person would be pretty much a shoo-in” to enlist under a waiver, states Army recruiter Terrence Hoard. “Now you’re not authorized.”
