Mexico Launches 11-point Plan to Shield Illegals Living in US

Mexican officials seem to sense that Mexican illegal immigrants will no longer be ignored by the United States of America. According to France24, the country is scrambling to help the millions of affected individuals in the aftermath of Trump’s election.

MEXICO CITY (AFP) –

Mexico is scrambling to ready its diplomats in the United States to handle millions of undocumented migrants’ potential needs following Donald Trump’s election, its foreign ministry said.

The ministry’s North American team huddled with Foreign Minister Claudia Ruiz Massieu Saturday to “analyze the results of the US election and discuss concrete actions concerning the future of the bilateral relationship” between the two countries, according to a statement.

Ruiz Massieu urged diplomats to get ready for a possible surge in consular assistance.

This includes help “avoiding provocations, as well as protecting against fraud,” the Foreign Ministry statement said, referring to the potential for crime rings to prey on migrants by selling fake documents, for example.

Mexico has created an 11-point plan to ‘deal with Trump’:

The call for unity is accompanied by Mexico’s somewhat ambiguous 11-point plan to shield Mexican immigrants living in the United States:

  1. The creation of a toll-free phone hotline (185 54 63 63 95) so Mexicans in the U.S. can contact their government in Mexico for assistance, information and consular protection.
  2. The activation of a direct 24-hour phone line in the U.S. for consular assistance.
  3. Encouraging people to download and make use of the app for Mexican U.S. consulates.
  4. Increasing the number of mobile consulates to assist a greater number of people with protection and documentation.
  5. Increasing the number of consulate appointments so more Mexicans can request documents such as passports and birth certificates.
  6. Promote the registration and issuance of birth certificates for children of Mexican nationals born in the U.S.
  7. Extend the work hours of protection departments at the consulates.
  8. Strengthen financial and banking assistance.
  9. Strengthen dialogue with local and state authorities.
  10. Improve ties with civil rights organizations.
  11. Call on the entire Mexican community to avoid conflict and any actions that could result in penal or administrative sanctions.

So far the Mexican government’s plan seems to exist only on paper. And many Mexicans want the government to launch a more aggressive approach in the form of economic retaliation and even threatening to revise security cooperation.

People in the United States may be skeptical that Trump will make good on his promise to crack down on illegal immigration, but Mexico seems convinced that he will.
