McCain Brain Surgery Much More Serious Than Reported; Shelves Health Care Bill Indefinitely

The initial news reports indicated that McCain underwent a “minimally invasive” craniotomy on Friday at the Mayo Clinic Hospital in Phoenix. Doctors said the procedure went well and that the senator was sent home to recuperate. The statement from McCain’s office said a two-inch blood clot was removed from “above his left eye” with an eyebrow incision to access it.

A statement released by Mr. McCain’s office on Saturday had suggested that he would be in Arizona recovering for just this week, but neurosurgeons interviewed said the typical recovery period could be longer.”

A craniotomy involves drilling a hole in the skull and removing a piece of it to gain access to the brain. An eyebrow incision would be used to remove a clot in or near the left frontal lobes of the brain.

From first-hand experience, I can assure there is nothing “minimally invasive” about a craniotomy, even if the opening is small. As with any surgery, there always is a risk of infection. So for McCain to have been discharged and sent home seems very peculiar.

Neurosurgeons contacted by news outlets ventured their opinions, even though they were not directly involved in the senator’s care.

Usually, a blood clot in this area would be a very concerning issue,” said Dr. Nrupen Baxi, an assistant professor of neurosurgery at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City.

McCain has a past history of melanoma, so any blood clot in the brain raises a concern about whether it has returned.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell indicted any vote on health care would be deferred until McCain returns to Washington. Therefore, any glitch in his recovery would just delay action longer.

McCain’s office indicated the decision to remove the clot came “following a routine annual physical.” Given the elective, and not emergency, nature of the surgery, the timing looks very curious, since a vote was likely to be taken this week.

On June 8, during a hearing taking testimony from former FBI Director James Comey, McCain alarmed colleagues with a bizarre line of questioning that erroneously tried to draw a connection between the FBI probe of Hillary Clinton’s email server to the current investigation of Special Prosecutor Robert Mueller into Russian interference in the U.S. 2016 election.

So both President Trump and former candidate Clinton are both involved in the investigation, yet one of them you said there’s going to be no charges and the other one that the investigation continues,” McCain said. “Well, I think there’s a double standard there to tell you the truth.”

When questioned about it, McCain blamed the mix-up on staying up late to watch an Arizona Diamondbacks baseball game.

In hindsight, one has to wonder if the blood clot in the frontal lobe had muddled McCain’s brain. His recent strange behavior certainly makes that a legitimate topic for discussion.

Another topic should be what after-effects McCain might suffer from having a blood clot on his brain if, in fact, it was a subdural hematoma as believed.

Certainly, the sudden news of his illness and the confusion over how long it might take to recover raises questions about how transparent he’s being about his condition. It also put health care reform on the shelf indefinitely, given the thin vote margin McConnell has to work with.
