Massive Earthquake That Will Soon Devastate the Pacific Northwest

Grand Prismatic Spring Yellowstone parkThe overdue Cascadia mega-quake is not the only pending threat looming over America –  or beneath it. While the earthquake scientists have determined the normal timeline of mega-quakes along the Cascadia subduction zone, another little-known danger also interests geologists.

Scientists studying the structure and activity beneath Yellowstone National Park know that a volcano lies under the area. But many Americans are surprised to learn that this is properly classed as a supervolcano. If the Cascadia mega-quake is long overdue and inevitable, the timetable of the Yellowstone supervolcano eruption is less certain.

Yellowstone last erupted over 600,000 years ago, however the volcanologists studying the park’s supervolcano were able to determine that a rapid buildup of magma could herald an eruption just decades later – a blink of an eye in geological terms.

“It’s one thing to think about this slow gradual buildup — it’s another thing to think about how you mobilize 1,000 cubic kilometers of magma in a decade,” said Kari Cooper, a geochemist at the University of California, Davis.
