Louisiana Learns Syrian Refugees Can Slip Off the Radar Once In America

While the media has been quick to shift the blame to the Catholic Charity involved in helping the refugees get settled, it’s important to remember that they’re only the middle man. If the blame should rest with anybody it’s with the Obama Administration and their lack of both screening and follow up for refugees.

“We’re at the receiving end,” Executive Director of Catholic Charities, Chad Aguillard said. “We receive them, we welcome them into our community and help them resettle. There has been a lot of commotion and fear with Syrians. The fear is justified, but we have to check that against reality.”

Monday, Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal sent a letter to President Obama demanding information about the Syrian refugees resettling into his state.

Last week, the city of New Orleans began receiving its first wave of Syrian refugees. As with former immigration crises and federal relocation policy, Louisiana has been kept in the dark about those seeking refuge in the state. It is irresponsible and severely disconcerting to place individuals, who may have ties to ISIS, in a state without the state’s knowledge or involvement.

With more and more U.S. governors rejecting President Obama’s refugee plan and a bill currently going through Congress that would restrict it, many Americans are seeing the dangers in welcoming these Syrian refugees into our country. And President Obama, of course, was quick to muster up a blame storm pointed at Republicans. When the “I told you so” moment arrives, the potential loss of life will leave a bad taste in everybody’s mouths.
