President Trump’s recent comments that maybe the US should clean its own house before worrying about others in general and Vladimir Putin’s Russia in particular during an interview with Bill O’Reilly struck a nervous chord with journalists, who inaccurately characterized the president’s remarks as apologism for Putin’s alleged silencing of critics. Joe Scarborough claimed that his comments indicated Trump was open to assassinating journalists, an irresponsible assertion that fellow MSNBC personality Katy Tur did her part to spread by saying that the president will be responsible in the event that any journalists face “suspicious deaths”.
