Jimmy Carter Praises Fidel Castro’s ‘Love of Country’

Fidel Castro died this week, prompting celebration from Cuban-Americans across the United States. But not everyone is celebrating. Castro may have impoverished his people and outlawed freedom of speech, assembly, and press, but he still has admirers in the U.S. Apparently, that includes at least one former president.

After news of the strongman’s death broke, the Carter Center in Atlanta, the charity founded by the 39th President, released the following statement:

“Rosalynn and I share our sympathies with the Castro family and the Cuban people on the death of Fidel Castro. We remember fondly our visits with him in Cuba and his love of his country. We wish the Cuban citizens peace and prosperity in the years ahead.”

Carter’s embrace of the brutal dictator is shocking, but not without precedent. The former president has previously been caught allegedly aiding a front group for Hamas. Read that story here.
