ISIS Targeting US Power Grid

From recent reports:

The Islamic State is trying to hack American electrical power companies — but they are terrible at it.

U.S. law enforcement officials revealed the hack attempts on Wednesday at a conference of American energy firms who were meeting about national security concerns.

In just the last year, a group calling itself the Cyber Caliphate hacked Central Command’s Twitter account and posted threatening tweets like:

ISIS US

The tweet reads:  “AMERICAN SOLDIERS, WE ARE COMING, WATCH YOUR BACK. ISIS.”

A widespread outage lasting even a few days could disable devices ranging from ATMs to cellphones to traffic lights, and could threaten lives if heating, air conditioning and health care systems exhaust their backup power supplies.

Some experts and officials fear the rash of smaller-scale incidents may point to broader security problems, raising questions about what can be done to safeguard the electrical grid from an attack that could leave millions without power for days or weeks, with potentially devastating consequences.

ISIS is waging a war on all fronts.  ISIS may not be sophisticated enough at this juncture to blow out power grids, the fact they are at work tirelessly attempting to do so is cause for alarm.

A power outage of a major metropolitan area, for a couple hours, would rain down havoc.  If coordinated with a ground force, of jihadists roaming through the area, could lead to devastation.  Another reason to keep your weapons, and ammo, safely at hand.

This scenario may seem far fetched a few years ago, is now credible to the Department of Justice.  With Obama emboldening the Middle East through his weak foreign policy, and Iran nuclear “give away”, ISIS and their ilk are currently attacking Israel en masse.  ISIS’s other target, the US should be on high alert for attacks, including but not limited to cyber warfare.
