Ireland On Its Way To Ending War on Drugs

With a new lawmaker in charge of Irish drug policy, many changes have been brought about. Under this new leadership, the government’s attitude towards marijuana usage has been much more relaxed. It’s now starting to be treated as a public health problem rather than a crime. According to Prague Pot:

Another European country is about to begin the journey to cannabis legalization. Aodharn O Riordain, Minister for the National Drugs Strategy has been a breath of fresh air since he arrived in the job. He has been up front and honest with the public over drugs. On Wednesday there was a think tank with local and regional actors within the drug and alcohol field. The general consensus was that decriminalization is a good thing for society. There is no justification for jailing people for growing or using cannabis. It is a strong medicine and most importantly for Ireland, it is a safe, healthy alternative to alcohol.

While this is good news when it comes to state violence against adults running their own lives, the article does seem to insinuate that the legalization of marijuana would be a good thing healthwise.

This is simply false. The research shows that chronic or even acute marijuana smoking can cause a host of health issues, from lung disease to a number of neurological defects. Promoting the use of cannabis while praising drug decriminalization is dangerous. Just as dangerous as the violent war on drugs.
