House Moves To Authorize Invasion of Iraq and Syria

A bipartisan group of Democrats and Republicans has requested Speaker of the House Paul Ryan to hold a vote to authorize troops deployment to fight the ISIS.

“We do not share the same policy prescriptions for U.S. military engagement in the region, but we do share the belief that it is past time for the Congress to fulfill its obligations under the Constitution and vote on an AUMF that clearly delineates the authority and limits, if any, on U.S. military engagement in Iraq, Syria and the surrounding region,” the group wrote in a lettersent [sic] to the Speaker on Friday.

A call for a new authorization for use of military force (AUMF) arose on November 4 when House members, primarily Democrats, argued the president lacks the constitutional authority to send special operations forces to Syria.

Republicans, led by South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham, believe a new AUMF is not required.

“Congress is pathetic here: the Congress has absolutely no stomach for destroying ISIL,” Graham argued. “Democrats and a few Republicans have absolutely no clue as to the threats we face—they would object to authorizing a ground force that could win.”

While Senator Lindsey Graham is right about a weak-willed Congress, something must be done to assure that Obama doesn’t commit more forces to a war Americans may not want to fight, at least not the way that Obama may prosecute such a conflict. Obama has a long track record of foreign policy foul ups and Congressional oversight may at least cap how much damage an Obama-led war effort may inflict on the taxpayer. It’s necessary to fight ISIS in the Levant, or we may have to fight them in the streets of New York or Los Angeles. But are we going to seriously trust this effort to Barrack Obama the Traitor?
