Harry Belafonte: Right-wing Has Set Race Relations Set Back Because of Obama

People are under the impression that voting a black man into the White House was a huge step forward for America. It actually wasn’t. It was one of the worst acts of uninformed voting in American history. The vote wasn’t about what’s best for America, it was motivated greatly by race. That’s not to say that African-Americans shouldn’t be president. They should be president because they’re the right person for the job, not because of their skin color.

I think a black man in the White House has awakened a lot of dichotomies here. I think, on the one hand, America took great pride in the fact that, to a world that saw us as a powerful force, but a very reactionary force, the election of Obama sent another signal. But it also awakened a right-wing energy in this country because nobody really expected that we would ever have elected a black man to be President. And when that reality was established, I think it shocked a lot of racist forces in this country.

Belafonte ended his interview by stating that the hurdles Obama has faced are because there are “forces” in our country that believe a black man should never run the country. If you look for racism hard enough, you’ll find it anywhere. The hurdles the president face are because he’s abusing his power, not because he’s black.
