A Handful of Governors Take the Action the Federal Government Won’t

Taylor Millard reported for HotAir:

Governors Greg Abbott, Asa Hutchinson, and Mike Pence have all issued orders on the topic after the killing of four Marines and one sailor in Tennessee. Governors Rick Scott, Bobby Jindal, and Mary Fallin’s orders are similar, but only cover qualified full-time guardsmen.

Greg Abbott’s announcement read:

It is with a heavy heart that I issue this order. After the recent shooting in Chattanooga, it has become clear that our military personnel must have the ability to defend themselves against these type of attacks on our own soil. Arming the National Guard at these bases will not only serve as a deterrent to anyone wishing to do harm to our service men and women, but will enable them to protect those living and working on the base.

So the good news is that soldiers working stateside on bases or in recruiting centers are no longer walking around with a bullseye painted on their backs, but only in Texas, Arkansas, Indiana, Florida, Louisiana , and Oklahoma.

Servicemen in other states obviously can’t rely on the federal administration, which could have responded to any of the military base incidents since Fort Hood in 2009. Can they rely on their state governors? Have those same state governors presided over the disarmament of their citizens to the extent that even civilian volunteers will have trouble stepping up?
