Gun permits and the subsequent purchase of weapons have risen substantially in Cologne, Germany since the mass sexual assaults on New Year’s Eve of 2015.
The police have lost the public trust, as their response to the assaults, committed by marauding gangs of “foreign men”, was paltry. Now citizens feel they must arm themselves in order to feel safe in public places.
Estimates of at least eight to ten application requests are being presented to the Düsseldorf police, spokesperson Andre Hartwich stated. At this pace, the 1500 requests for 2015, will be more than doubled, though Hartwich believes the interest will decrease.
Thus far, Frankfurt Police procedural office reports that they have had at least 13 applications a day, in comparison to the previous year’s one to two a day.
When crime happens and the police to nothing, whether by government compulsion or negligence, the people will rise up to protect themselves, it is human nature to protect one’s own life.

Why would “interest decrease”? Perhaps because initial paranoia often wanes after some careful consideration?
Scott, You are right in that assessment, and I hope you consider the other side to your statement. In the U.S. in all 50 states if one is deemed mentally incompetent there are a large host of restrictions in their lives i.e. Owning or purchasing a firearm. I do agree in some of the states with in the United States have a some what “easier” process for purchasing a firearm, but there are none without any regulations or legality. Does a state with “weaker” gun laws coincide with gun violence? FBI says multiple times No. What does this mean for Germany? It means that they are possibly going to have an increase of fear, dissolutions about their leaders/political and otherwise, hostility towards minority’s from both sides (refugees and Germans) sound familiar? Truth? This Middle East problem can’t be hashed away anytime soon, and the out look is getting kind of scary. I think it may get worse before it gets better not being a pessimist, but a very from an Academic angle.
