As the issue of child marriage gains more attention, New Jersey legislators decided to do something about it and passed a bill that would prohibit marriage of any children under age 18.
Governor Chris Christie was handed the opportunity to make New Jersey the first state to officially ban child marriage without exception.
Nancy Munoz, the bill’s main sponsor, is a Republican assemblywoman from Union. She introduced the bill after hearing testimony in committee hearings about children being forced into marriage “for religious reasons.”
Under current New Jersey law, children under age 16 can be legally married with parental consent and approval from a sympathetic judge.

I’m no fan of his but he just wanted ” an exception so a judge can approve marriages for 16- and 17-year-olds.” What’s wrong with that? There may be a young unmarried girl who wants to marry, maybe she would get health benefits for the child if allowed to, who knows but who is the state to tell them under no circumstances can they marry?
Agree. Lots of 16 and 17 yr olds want to marry, whether it is a smart idea or not. If a 16 yr old can have an abortion without parental consent, she should be able to marry with parental consent. I certainly do not advocate allowing any young girl to marry or even 16 and 17 yr olds to marry much older men or be forced to marry against their will. Some religions in this country allow child brides, namely Islam, so there should be a limit and it actually should be nationwide, but to stop 16 and 17 yr olds when they can have abortions or join the military, and quit school unless they plan to stop the abortions, joining military at 17 and quitting school at 16 and 17, then no. Pass it with the changes Christie recommended.
I cannot respect any man or woman who does not protect the young people (children) of our nation. This is dispicable!

Glad this man did not make president. He does not seem to understand that adult men are not entitled to indulge in sex with a child just because some religion which against our laws says it is the thing to do. Mohamad married a little girl under the age of 12, is that OK? Maybe Chris has those type of fantasies? Just because something is a religious does not make it right. Next we will be having human sacrificing if we leave it to men like him.
