Getting Away With Murder in Baltimore – “Yes We Can!”

Baltimore exceeded an ugly milestone just three months after riots erupted in response to the death of Freddie Gray in police custody: With 45 homicides in July, the city has seen more bloodshed in a single month than it has in 43 years.
Fox News noted the carnage:

This year’s homicides have now reached 189. Nonfatal shootings have soared to 366, compared to 200 by the same date last year. July’s total was the worst since the city recorded 45 killings in August 1972, according to The Baltimore Sun. The chance of getting caught for murder is 36.6%. You literally can get away with murder in Baltimore.

Whatever Rawlings-Blake is doing in Baltimore isn’t working at all. She fired the police commissioner after hamstringing him and the force, thus fomenting the riots. With 300,000 doses of opiates stolen from drug stores during the unrest, gangs are in the drivers seat. Street gangs control large parts of the city. Perhaps rather than blaming the cops or conjuring up new and idiotic social interaction schemes, the city might ask the country’s best mayor to resign and turn the job over to somebody capable of restoring some semblance of law and order in the streets.
