The German finance minster, Wolfgang Schaeuble, has called for an EU-wide petrol tax in order to finance policies designed to ease the burdens of the migrant crisis. The tax would be necessary to pay for a strengthening the external borders of the Schengen area. Mr. Schaeuble warned that if the Schengen external borders were not strengthened, Germany could be forced to close their borders.
Mr. Schaeuble framed the tax as one that should be shared by the European Union in the same way they have shared the economic and societal burdens of the migrant crisis. Germany has so far accepted the majority of incoming refugees and asylum seekers since the beginning of the migrant crisis.
This suggestion comes on the heels of the Cologne sex scandals that rocked the country on New Years’ Eve and raised concerns about the security of German citizens.
