GAO: The EPA Engaged in “Covert Propaganda” and Violated Federal Law

The most effective and the most underhanded use of social media by th EPA, was their Thunderclap campaign.

Thunderclap, is a social media “crowd funding” tool. Really it’s a tool that rewards a successful campaign with a burst of ads, Tweets, etc… if you can “reach your supporter goal.”

From Thunderclap’s Website:

If you reach your supporter goal, Thunderclap will blast out a timed Twitter, Facebook, or Tumblr post from all your supporters, creating a wave of attention.

The game is rigged here because President Obama’s Digital Strategy unit was writing the agitprop and using the EPA as a ministry of disinformation. Getting a few thousand “supporters” from Obama campaign servers is not a real campaign, it’s astroturfing 101.

Looking through rose colored glasses, here is the New York Time’s description of this office:

The publicity campaign was part of a broader effort by the Obama administration to counter critics of its policies through social media tools, communicating directly with Americans and bypassing traditional news organizations.

At the White House, top aides to President Obama have formed the Office of Digital Strategy, which promotes his agenda on Twitter, Facebook, Medium and other social sites. Shailagh Murray, a senior adviser to the president, is charged in part with expanding Mr. Obama’s presence in that online world.

Does that sound good to you? It’s Orwellian at best.

How about the “Office of Digital Strategy” starts taking on ISIS and other enemies instead of attacking American companies.

Someone would just have to get the President interested in that first.
