Al Franken & Prominent Democrats Return More Than $1M in Donations Due to Violations

The Boston Globe and the Center for Responsive Politics have joined forces to  launch an independent investigation into a large-scale money-laundering and tax-fraud scheme that was initiated by the Thornton Law Firm out of Boston.  This tiny law firm was responsible over the past decade for the 11th highest political donations total in the entire country, despite its small size.

Senator Al Franken has been caught up in the donations investigation and has now returned $40,882 to the firm while the examination in the firm’s records is ongoing.  More than a million dollars has already been returned by Democrat politicians and organizations, as it appears that the only donations the firm has ever issued were to Democratic entities.

In addition to Hillary Clinton, Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, Russ Feingold of Wisconsin, and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, there have been other Democrats as well.  Jon Tester of Montana, Harry Reid of Nevada and David Ige of Hawaii.

Franken’s spokesman told the Star Tribune said that the senator returned the contributions after learning of the improper reimbursements. Franken has until April 3 to report the sources of the donations to the Federal Elections Commission.

The combined amount of returned contributions around the world could end up being the largest type of reimbursement in history.

This process is known as using straw-donors and is one of the most serious Federal Elections Commission’s (FEC) donations violations.  Beginning in 2003 when the firm’s donations totaled $257,300, it would eventually balloon to over $1M just a decade later.
