Foreign-Born Gaining Employment as Native-Born American Lose Jobs

According the Bureau of Labor Statistics numbers, in September over 24 million foreign born people were employed in the United States, growing by 14,000 jobs. Meanwhile, Native-born Americans were just north of 124 million, declining by 262,000 jobs since August.

While the native-born population has netted 528,000 jobs since December 2007, foreign-born people have gained about 2.1 million jobs. This occurred despite the fact that the native-born non-institutional population increased more than twice as much as the foreign-born population in that time — compare 12.9 million to 5.2 million foreign-born people.

It’s no secret that employers would rather hire somebody unqualified for a job if they can pay them less than somebody who is qualified. This is why so many job postings are listed by “equal opportunity employers”. With more and more Americans out of work, one can’t help but wonder if foreign born employees are the cause.
