A hiker in the Deep Creek Hot Springs area of the Mohave Desert had a close encounter with 17 Middle Eastern men, shooting guns and chanting ‘Allah akbar’.
I was about 50 feet away from the hot tub and saw them fire about six to eight shots. I could see them near the hot tubs talking and shooting. I said, “I’m out of here, these guys are crazy,” and decided to leave. As I started heading up the trail I could see them shooting through the canyons. They were shooting toward the hills where people were camping.
None of the men were arrested and officers say that they were cooperative. A search helicopter located them and San Bernardino County Sheriff detained and interviewed them, determining that none were identified as terrorists.
The guns that were fired, reported local CBS News affiliate in Los Angeles said that “several handguns, a rifle, and a shotgun were found on the men, several of which were described on the police scanner as wearing turbans.” All the weapons were registered.
The FBI is working with local authorities to determine if any crimes were in fact committed. None of the men had outstanding warrants or criminal records.
This area is a little over an hour away from the devastating San Bernardino Christmas terror attack that claimed 14 lives and injured 22.
