The father of Omar Mateen, Seddique Mir Mateen, has a profoundly odd vitae. He has a YouTube program where he supports the Afghan Taliban, he has declared that he is running a campaign for the president of Afghanistan out of his Florida residence. He also has made anti-LGBT statements on social media, “The punishment for homosexuality is upon God and He will decide on them not humans”.
In interviews after the slaughter, elder Mateen has condemned his son's behavior, yet his online posts seem to contradict this condemnation. Breitbart has created a list of bizarre elder Mateen facts that demonstrate the ideology under which Omar Mateen was raised.
Seddique Mir Mateen is an ideological supporter of the Afghan Taliban. He has posted a number of videos on his Youtube and Facebook pages praising the Taliban in Afghanistan. These videos appear in a Youtube page titled “Durand Jirga,” the name of his private corporation.
“Durand Jirga INC” is classified as a non-profit company out of Port St Lucie, Florida. It appears to have board members scattered nationwide, though there is no official website or indication of what the corporation does, other than post Mateen’s bizarre videos on Youtube.
Seddique Mateen currently hosts a program on a California-based satellite Afghan TV station. The show focus’ on the Afghan diaspora in the in the U.S. The name of the show is “Durand Jirga Show”, which is the same name as his company.
Two months ago, a business under his name called “The Provisional Government of Afghanistan” received a business license from the state of Florida.
Saddique has published a video in which he appears to claim that he is currently running for President of Afghanistan from Florida. In a video posted shortly before his son went on his terror rampage, the elder Mateen posted a video to his Facebook page where he appears in a military uniform and begins to give orders as if he was the President of Afganistan. “I order national army, national police and intelligence department to immediately imprison Karzai, Ashraf Ghani, Zalmay Khalilzad, Atmar, and Sayyaf,” he said, mentioning the current and former presidents of Afghanistan and other high-ranking officials. “They are against our countrymen, and against our homeland.”
On Monday morning, a video of Mateen appeared on social media where he declared, “God will punish those involved in homosexuality.” He added as a caveat that homosexuality was “not an issue that humans should deal with,” but one that supernatural powers should punish.
Following the attack, in interviews with various news agencies, the elder Mateen insisted his son’s actions had nothing to do with religion. He maintained that he had no idea why his son would do this, other than mentioning an anecdote in which he recalled his son becoming angry after seeing a gay couple kissing in public. He highlighted that they both attend Mosque on Friday and everything seemed normal.
Senior Mateen said he was shocked by his son’s behavior. Seddique is also politically active and has met with members of the State Department and other political leaders. The Today Show reports, “He is from Afghanistan and has written openly on social media about his support for the Taliban, which like ISIS, is an extremist Islamic group in Afghanistan.”
In one video, Mateen expresses gratitude toward the Afghan Taliban, while denouncing the Pakistani government.
“Our brothers in Waziristan, our warrior brothers in [the] Taliban movement and national Afghan Taliban are rising up,” he said. “Inshallah the Durand Line issue will be solved soon.”
This April, Mateen was in Washington DC doing advocacy work with Congress and the State Department
Seddique Mateen is an effusive poster on social media. The following posts from his Facebook describe a trip to Washington DC in April. He can be seen posing in front of State Department offices & the Democratic Foreign Services Committee offices.
On Facebook, Mateen frequently describes his run for president of Afghanistan. He announced his candidacy on his YouTube show:
The most recent video on Mateen’s YouTube channel shows him declaring his candidacy for the Afghan presidency. The timing of the video is strange, as it came a year after presidential elections were held in Afghanistan.
Another oddity is that he believes people are trying to come to the United States to kill him.
Equally as strange are the numerous photos posted on Facebook addressed to the military and Obama, showing his support for the Afghan Taliban, claiming that Pakistan is the capital of terrorism, and seeking support from the State Department to defeat Pakistan. He also started a corporation in his state of Florida called “The Provisional Government of Afghanistan”.
