Famous Theatre BANS ‘Gone with the Wind’ for Being ‘Insensitive’

Orpheum Theatre Group in Memphis Tennesse will no longer be screening “Gone with the Wind”. This ends their 34-year old tradition.

The board of directors of the Orpheum Theatre Group in Memphis, Tennessee has decided to end a 34-year tradition of screening “Gone with the Wind” because the board says the movie is now “insensitive.”

Board members announced the plan to remove the 1939 epic from The Orpehum’s 2018 summer movie series on Friday, reports Memphis CBS affiliate WREG-TV.

“As an organization whose stated mission is to ‘entertain, educate and enlighten the communities it serves,’ the Orpheum cannot show a film that is insensitive to a large segment of its local population,” board members said in a statement.

Are we really surprised, sadly? And as much as I’d love to just pull a page out of Margret Mitchell’s classic, and paraphrase the dashing Rhett Butler to say “Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn”. That is not actually possible. Because what is happening right now signifies the larger orders being passed throughout Hollywood to join in on the censorship of history, information, and joy.

It will only be a matter of time until films such as Gone with the Wind become rare collector’s item’s only available on the black market. Google and other internet search providers will block streaming or online viewing. Amazon and eBay will ban selling used copies via their marketplaces to supposedly stop “inciting the spread of insensitive material’. And of course, the original manufactures or film giants holding the copyrights will bury all traces of these classics deep in their vaults never to be seen or heard from again.

This is the future. Is it not?
