“Fact Checking” Site, Snopes, Snared in Nasty Embezzlement Case

For many Internet users, Snopes became the go to site when attempting to verify Internet claims.  With the recent commotion over “fake news,” the site grew in importance, especially when Facebook announced its intention to use it for fact checking.

So now we get this piece of news that is a bit inconvenient both for Snopes and Facebook.

Snopes, the website Facebook chose to “fact check” stories to eliminate “fake news”, has been accused of defrauding the website to pay for prostitutes.

According to the Daily Mail, Snopes founder David Mikkelson has been accused of embezzling “$98,000 from the company over the course of four years ‘which he expended upon himself and the prostitutes he hired’.”

Perfect.  The official Facebook fact-checker used to root on fake news has been accused of embezzling money to pay for hookers.

Recall that other maxim you were taught as a kid about only believing half of what you read?  Now would be a good time to revisit that and realize that ultimately it is your responsibility to check out the sources from which you get your news.
