Emory University Offers to Pay 100% of Tuition of Illegal Aliens

The last we heard, tuition and housing at some of the well-known private universities now exceeds $60,000 per year.  Perhaps it has gotten even higher now. The point is that the percentage of families that can write out a check for a quarter of a million dollars per kid for four years of college is rather small. Hence the need for scholarships and financial aid.

Into this scenario we introduce the issue of illegal aliens as we are confronted with the absurd spectacle of those who have entered this country illegally, and are thus liable to be deported, knowingly being granted scholarships by colleges.

Although international students are expected to pay full tuition, undocumented undergraduate students at Emory will have “100% of demonstrated financial need” covered by the university.

So Emory has determined that those who entered our country in violation of the law are entitled to what amounts to free tuition, while those who have followed the law when coming here to study have to pay up. What do you say to something as bizarre as that?

Here’s the fine print:

“Emory meets 100% of demonstrated financial need for undergraduate Undocumented Students (with or without DACA) who are admitted as first-year, first-degree-seeking students, and who graduated from a U.S. High school through a combination of grants and scholarships, institutional work study (DACA students only), and institutional loans. Undocumented Students without DACA status may receive an institutional loan in place of the typical work study award,” the university’s website states.

Even the loan makes no sense. If the student gets deported, is the lender going to chase him or her down overseas to collect? Obviously not. And if someone is willing to break the law to get here, how responsible should one expect them to be with regard to loan repayment.

According to Megan McRainey who is a spokesperson for Emory:

“Emory accepts undocumented students for admission and financial aid, including those under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival (DACA) program,” McRainey wrote, adding that providing financial aid coverage to undocumented students aligns with Emory’s goal of welcoming “students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds.”

It’s another example of leftist ideology finding new ways to dismantle American society.

In 2016, Breitbart News reported that students at Emory claimed that they were scared and “in pain” after students wrote pro-Trump chalk messages on the university’s sidewalks.

That’s too bad. It’s called freedom of speech, something universities are supposed to be all about. Then again, we don’t know which students were so affected by pro-Trump messages. If it’s the illegal aliens, concerned they might get deported, then there is a least one part of this story that makes sense.
