Elderly Veteran Saves The Lives of 16 Children

James Vernon, a 75 year old US Army veteran, managed to stop 19 year old Dustin Brown from slaying a library room full of children.

Vernon was leading the room in a home school chess club meeting when Brown stepped in the doorway wielding two knives, their handles wrapped in tap for a better grip. “I’m going to kill some people!” said Brown.

“The roomful of children enjoying a home school chess club meeting drew his focus and anger, he said. Brown, free on bond while facing prosecution charges of possessing child pornography, said he wanted the children to die.”

“I grabbed him and threw … Somehow he wound up on a table” with the knife in his left hand pinned under his body, Vernon said. “I hit him on the (right) collarbone with my closed hand” until Brown, his arm numbed by the blows, dropped that knife.

Vernon, “bleeding pretty good,” held him until a library employee arrived to remove the knives and help keep Brown pinned until police officers and paramedics arrived.

One has to ask what would have happened if another elderly person were there, someone without Army training and a Deadwood cool like Vernon. This time was lucky, but what happens the next time an unarmed teacher has to protect their children without a gun?

When will teachers be allowed to provide the protection their students need in an emergency? We must demand that teachers be allowed to exercise their rights to firearms to prevent situations like what happened here.
