The #NeverTrump movement is expanding past the GOP establishment and enlisting some of the country’s most powerful CEOs and businessmen.
Huffington Post reporter Ryan Grim told CNN’s Brooke Baldwin on Tuesday that “something like 54 private jets” had arrived at an elite meeting of tech CEOs, GOP party insiders and big donors set on stopping Donald Trump before he wins the Republican nomination.
The meeting was the annual World Forum, an off-the-record conference hosted by the American Enterprise Institute (AEI), a leading Washington, D.C.-based conservative think tank. AEI has hosted the “secretive” event since 1982, but this year had a unique focus. Republican pundit Bill Kristol and former George W. Bush strategist Karl Rove were there, among others, including leaders of both the House and Senate.
Unfortunately, the people who’ve converged for the meeting are only adding more fuel to the anti-establishment GOP sentiment.
“They have Karl Rove there – Karl Rove! The guy who melted down live on air because he didn’t get the 2012 election remotely right, he’s going to give them a presentation on how to stop Trump?” he continued. “The guy’s gotta be laughing about this every time he reads an article about it. It’s everything Trump is running against.”
“This is exactly what Trump voters are rebelling against … they hate this idea that this oligarchy run the country, that the Democrats and a big chunk of Republicans are in league with each other, that there’s a continuum now between the left and the right in this business class, and they’re going to protect their interests above all else.”
If the GOP establishment truly wants to take down Trump, they’ve got to find someone outside of the establishment to do so. Its unlikely that those fed up with Washington’s elite will be taking orders from the likes of Mitt Romney and Karl Rove, after all.
