Democrats Win – Block Abortion Pain Bill

Three Democrats broke with their party and voted to pass the bill.  Sen. Bob Casey, (D-PA), Senator Joe Donnelly (D-IN) and Joe Manchin (D-WV).  Republicans who voted to allow abortions after 20 weeks, were Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) and Sen. Mark Kirk (R-IL).

The Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act is based on scientific evidence that has shown that unborn babies at least at 20 weeks after fertilization can feel the pain associated with being destroyed during an abortion.

Democrats stated that McConnell only called the vote for theater-to appease the pro-life conservatives.  McConnell never fought for it, or intended to spend much time to rally more votes.

McConnell stated:

“We in this chamber are never going to agree completely on the abortion question,” McConnell said. “But we should at least be able to agree that if an unborn child has reached the point where he or she can feel pain, that child’s life deserves protection.”
