Democrat Wants to Create Safe Zones for Drug Addicts

The bill from Democratic Assemblywoman Susan Talamantes Eggman would create an injection facility where drug addicts could come to shoot up such drugs as heroin, crack cocaine, opioids, and other hard drugs with the assistance of government workers, and without the fear of being arrested. Of course Eggman believes that illicit drug use is a public health issue and a “disease” that the state must treat like the flu rather than a law enforcement issue that must be addressed in order to keep society safe. It is well known that a majority of property crimes are committed by drug users, generally to support their habit. This bill would open the door and destigmatize the use of hard drugs so anyone could go to the “center for shooting up” and get their fix.

The bill from Democratic Assemblywoman Susan Talamantes Eggman would make it legal for local and state health departments to allow the use of controlled substances in clinics that would offer medical intervention.

Supporters say the facilities would reduce deaths and transmissions of HIV and hepatitis C.

“Addiction is a health care issue, and I think it’s high time we started treating it as a public health issue, versus a criminal issue,” Eggman said. “This bill is one step to be able to address the heroin addiction and epidemic of overdoses that we’re having in our country.”

Canadian Sen. Larry Campbell, who helped establish [a] facility as Vancouver mayor, joined Eggman in Sacramento to support her proposal. He said the Vancouver program has reduced the number of overdoses in the city and moved drug use out of the public eye.

“The drug is illegal, but the person who’s using that drug is suffering from a recognized medical disease,” Campbell said. “What this does is simply treat the addiction, keep somebody alive and keep them off the streets.”

The California measure faces strong opposition from sheriffs and police chiefs concerned the facilities would encourage drug use.

“This sends entirely the wrong message regarding drug use and likely creates civil liability issues for participating governments and officials,” said Asha Harris, spokeswoman for the California State Sheriffs’ Association.

Eggman said she has not reached out to the agency about her proposal.

Of course she has not reached out to law enforcement. They are the ones that have to deal with drug users every day, and they have a much better idea about the “disease” these criminals are suffering from, and how they impact a peaceful society with their law-breaking and drug using activities.

It is also doubtful that she has reached out to ordinary citizens, who would reject the idea of a “shooting” house in their neighborhood. She does, however, want to facilitate and accommodate the use of these damaging and illegal drugs by eliminating personal responsibility and culpability for their use. No wonder our society is coming apart at the seams.

Ms. Eggman needs to get out into regular society and understand the needs of ordinary citizens who simply want to play by the rules and live a peaceful and safe life.
