CSPAN Abruptly Cuts to Kremlin-backed News Channel ‘Russia Today’ During Congressional Hearing

Not helping matters at all was a bizarre occurrence on C-SPAN just yesterday. While the network aired footage of California Representative Maxine Waters speaking before her colleagues in the Capitol, the channel abruptly cut to a feed from RT, the Kremlin-owned news outlet formerly known as Russia Today. Although C-SPAN claims that the event was merely a technical issue, one can’t help but wonder how deep the Russians’ ability to infiltrate our media and electronic systems really go:

“We are currently investigating and troubleshooting this occurrence. As RT is one of the networks we regularly monitor, we are operating under the assumption that it was an internal routing issue. If that changes we will certainly let you know,” the statement added. The RT footage aired for “about ten minutes” on C-SPAN, according to Timothy Burke, an editor for Deadspin who said he saw the interruption in real time.

According to Timothy Burke, an editor of Deadspin who witnessed the interruption as it was happening, RT “aired for about ten minutes before C-SPAN1 came back.”
