Colts Linebacker to Honor Trayvon Martin with Pair of Cleats

The NFL, in its quest to remain relevant, has decided to hold a memorial of sorts, where players may choose a charity that they feel a particular affinity for, and affix a logo or artwork for such an organization to their cleats in order to “raise awareness” of said charities.

Colts Linebacker Anthony Walker has opted to honor Trayvon Martin upon his pair of shoes, with artwork that depicts the young man’s face and his name and date of death.

NFL players will pay tribute to the cause of their choice this weekend, through the league’s “My Cause, My Cleats” campaign.

Most will wear cleats honoring organizations that fight cancer, or promote literacy. Others, will dedicate their footwear to messages far more personal.

Colts LB Anthony Walker will wear a pair of cleats honoring Trayvon Martin, the Miami teenager killed in an altercation with neighborhood watchman George Zimmer in February of 2012:

Walker, a Miami native, says the cleats will support the Trayvon Martin Foundation. According to TMZ Sports, “The cleats were made by sneaker artist Desmond Jones (aka Skilz)…”

The Colts will play the Jaguars in Jacksonville on Sunday.

The Trayvon Martin Foundation’s stated mission is:

The Trayvon Martin Foundation is a social justice organization committed to ending senseless gun violence, strengthening families through holistic support, S.T.E.M. education for women and minorities and mentoring.  Our strategy is to move from intervention to reform.  Positively changing the lives of youth and their families through strategic programming and perpetual services is at the core of our existence.

The mission does sound like it’s a good message and it certainly appears as if the parents are focusing on the mentoring of young people to give them a better leg up in life than the life that is promised by an ex-president that insists that the system is rigged against them and there’s nothing they can do except blame White people for being racist.

The bittersweet part of this story is that it took a tragedy for the community there to rise to action on behalf of misguided youths who have been told for too long that violence and defiance is not their fault.
