CNN: If Trump, Top Officials All Die at Inauguration Obama Will Take Over

The sooner the inauguration is over and Mr. Trump’s cabinet picks are confirmed, the sooner we can stop spending time discussing wild theories about the line of succession should a mass tragedy occur at the inauguration that eliminated both Mr. Trump and Mr. Pence as well as the rest of those present who are in that line of succession. It is a miserable thing to have to contemplate, yet for those who do wish to delve into such matters, there is an answer as to who would become president should such a tragedy occur, a thought CNN appears to relish.

Here’s the order of succession: vice-president, House speaker, president pro tem of the Senate, and then down the list of cabinet secretaries beginning with the secretary of state. At the time Mr. Trump is sworn in, there will be no cabinet secretaries in office since Mr. Obama’s cabinet will have resigned, and Mr. Trump’s have not yet been confirmed. So if the leadership listed above were to get wiped out, who would become at least acting president?

According the State Department, the highest-ranking non-political official would become secretary of state, and as such, would succeed to the office of president. That most senior position is the under secretary of state for political affairs, a position currently held by an Obama appointee named Tom Shannon.

Now you know the story. Let us hope and pray we never have reason to revisit it.
