A major decision that will impact Minnesotans’ privacy rights is waiting to be heard in the state’s court of Appeals.
It all started off simply enough. Jason and Jackie Wiebesick were a Golden Valley couple who lived in a duplex. One day, officials from the city approached them to ask permission to inspect their home. The stated reason was to collect information so as to make a decision over whether to renew the Wiebesick’s rental license.
Disturbed by the prospect of unfamiliar people walking around their home, the Wiebesick’s turned down the inspectors’ request. One might think it would have ended there, but the city saw to it that it didn’t.
Taking the case to court, Golden Valley authorities implored a county judge to issue a warrant overriding the Wiebesick’s objections and allowing them into the house. Tellingly, the judge refused their request for a warrant, prompting the city to reach even higher.
See video about the case on the next page:
The most fear striking words ever spoken “I am from the government and I am here to help.”
No warrant…that’s what bu kshot is for 😉
What the hell is a renters liscence? I’ve lived in Texas my entire life and I’ve never heard from any landlord unless I contact them about something.
Is this a welfare house being paid by government tax payers. If so they have no rights. If it’s a private owned bussiness only the Landlord has a right to do inspection accroding to what ever contract they have signed. Here we have section three houses were the Government pays private owned houses to be rented for the use of welfare bums. Once again they have no right.
Rights? Rights! We don’t need no stinkin’ RIGHTS! This is the USSA! The United Socialist States of America!
It sounds like its a city-owned property… “rental license?” New term for me. If the city owns it, they can inspect it. Just like any landlord.
that dog dont hunt!
I’m not from Minnesota but I can not imagine how an inspection of this couple’s private home could possibly be a determinate of whether or not to renew their rental license. Never actually heard of a rental license. Is that something Minnesotans have to get in order to lease their property to the public or what? Or is this a rental agreement with a public housing authority?
Wow I sure hope they don’t try that at my place snares and booby traps everywhere
