The Citadel Considers Uniform Exception for Muslim ‘Hijab’

After announcing in 2014 that the Pentagon would be granting some religious exemptions for military members, many worried that this was a slippery slope from which there would be no return.

Now, one of the nation’s oldest and most respected military colleges is engulfed in controversy over whether to allow a Muslim female student — who has been admitted, but has not yet enrolled — to be allowed to wear her hijab with her military uniform.  Breitbart reports on a current student’s Facebook post that has been met with support, as well as some opposition.

The cadet makes the distinction between the true equality of simple acceptance and special requests for new rules:

This girl should be welcomed to the Corps with open arms, as should any person of any religion, race, gender, or identity. That’s equality. It’s not equality to let one of those groups follow a different set of rules… Equality means the same set of rules for everyone. Not different rules for different people. It means accepting everyone, and giving them the same tools to succeed as the rest. The inwardly self-contradictory arguments of the Left disagree with this mindset and I truly believe that if those arguments continue to prevail, this country will no longer be what it once was…

Pinelli [the cadet], who reportedly is a Donald Trump campaign intern, concludes his post with, “For Christ’s sake, Make America Great Again.”

Like the Pentagon, The Citadel is unlikely to put up much of a fight against the female student.  Despite concerns that exemptions such as this are slowly eating away at the fabric of  200-year-old traditions, they are more concerned with the negative publicity over a politically incorrect decision.
