Chinese Restaurants Busted Spiking Food with Morphine to get Customers Addicted

This isn’t the first time this issue has surfaced in the Chinese media. While they have never had the most strict of food standards, this is a bit ridiculous.

“Consuming soup or hot pots mixed with poppies for a long time will make you become addicted … and eventually lead you to drug abuse in serious cases,” said Wei Tao, deputy chief of the Food Institute with Guizhou Provincial Centre for Disease Control.

In an earlier case, one restaurant owner was sentenced to 18 months in prison for lacing his food with poppy powder, a powerful opiate.

Apparently, when you mix opiates with chili oil or Chinese salt, it’s difficult to detect, especially in low quantities. That being said, even low quantities can affect the human body, causing drug addictions that, in this case, they might not have known they had.
