China Warns of Growing Border Security Risks

In a major editorial, the official People’s Liberation Army Daily claims the world is looking at unparalleled deviations. China has become progressively self-assured in its row with Japan over uninhabited islets in the East China Sea, while over in the South China Sea there are reclaimed areas in waters where Vietnam, the Philippines, Taiwan, Malaysia and Brunei all have competing assertions.

“The situation surrounding our country is generally stable, but the risks and challenges are extremely severe, and the possibility of chaos and war on our doorstep has increased,” it said.

“The maritime security environment is more complicated, and the undercurrents in the East and South China Seas have been gushing up,” the paper wrote.

China cautiously watches threats from fanatics in countries like Afghanistan, and the possibility of war on the Korean peninsula. There is also instability on the border with Myanmar and India, not to mention the problem of self-ruled Taiwan.

“The mission of protecting national unity, territorial integrity and development interests is difficult and strenuous,” the paper said.

China’s military has also been undergoing a severe corruption situation, and this week announced another senior army officer, Guo Boxiong, would be prosecuted for graft.
