Chicago’s Gun Control Success: 2703 Shootings, 440 Deaths Year-To-Date

Gun Control Laws of Limited Value

A particularly apt city to examine when considering the effectiveness of gun control laws is Obama’s own Chicago, with some of the strictest laws in the nation.  As of November 23, there were 2,703 shootings in the city resulting in 440 year-to-date deaths.  The death toll has already exceeded the number of gun related deaths for all of 2014.  One would think that strict gun control laws would limit or decrease perpetrators of crime, but that is just not the case. Criminals rarely obtain their weapons legally, which means the ones who pay the price for strict controls are the law-abiding citizens who need protection from the criminals. Obama ignores that fact, and denigrates the gun owners who are simply seeking to protect themselves and their families.

The Chicago Tribune recently reported that 11 people were shot, and five killed, over the course of last weekend alone. Half of those wounded were shot on November 22 “between about 12:25 p.m. and 8:40 p.m.” Three of those killed were shot on that same day, between those same hours as well. That is very close to the time that Obama was excoriating Colorado Springs for the recent shooting and calling for greater gun control laws.

It is worth noting that while this violence proves the impotency of gun control in general, it is especially damning when juxtaposed with some of the most recent gun control endeavors in particular.

For example, Chicago implemented a “violence tax” at suburban Cook County gun stores in April 2013. The tax is gathered on each gun and bullet sold within the county. Then, in 2014–the first full calendar year after the implementation of the tax–the Chicago Tribune reported 434 deaths–a 19 death increase over 2013.

President Obama, who mentions nothing about the out-of-control gun violence in Chicago, cannot be unaware of the failure of gun control laws to decrease or eliminate the deaths and injury caused by guns in various gun-free cities and zones throughout the nation. We can only conclude that his call for more gun laws and limitations is simply about more government control of law abiding citizens and less about actual gun control.
