California Police Department Trades in Batons for Nunchucks

This new method comes in the form of an old weapon commonly referred to as nun-chucks. While trading in their batons for this “new” non-lethal weapon isn’t mandatory, twenty police officers have adopted the use of the centuries old Chinese weapon in a city of 10,000 people.

“In an era where the general public is extremely sensitive to police techniques and use of force issues, [nunchucks offer] another force option that may offset some of the more aggressive perceptions the public has about police intervention.”

In terms of its use by police, a training system for nunchucks was developed by retired police Sgt. Kevin Orcutt as early as 1985, which Anderson Sgt. Casey Day has been certified to train other officers to use.

Demonstrating how the altered plastic and nylon martial arts weapons are designed to wrap around wrists, ankles and other extremities.

Officers who don’t plan on trading in their batons for nun-chucks will still have to pass a sixteen hour training course, should they ever decide to make the switch. Laugh if you want, but using nun-chucks kind of makes sense.
