Program for Illegals is Too Expensive
The law that Jerry Brown signed into law in 2013 was AB 60, sponsored by Gil Cedillo, a Latino activist legislator who was known as “one bill Gil.” He did not sponsor legislation that would benefit all the citizens of the state of California, he focused on one major cause… providing drivers licenses to illegal aliens living in California.
In polling it was clear that the people of California rejected this idea, but that did not dissuade Cedilla or the majority Democrat legislature. The bill passed, and the flood of applicants began. Since January 2, 2015, there have been 830,000 “undocumented applicants” who have applied for a California drivers license.
The phony claim that they are “hiding in the shadows” is clearly a lie since they can walk into the Department of Motor Vehicles to obtain a license without the least fear that they will be apprehended and deported. And now they are being rewarded for their law breaking efforts by being given something that should be reserved for legal and lawful citizens and residents.
The immigrants’ licenses are emblazoned with “federal limits apply,” which means other states’ law enforcement officers and federal officials do not have to regard them as valid forms of identification, according to the Los Angeles Times. 12 states now offer driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants.; 22% of illegal immigrants in the nation reside in California, the largest percentage in the country.
Prior to the passage of AB 60, the California DMV hired 1,000 temporary employees and opened four more processing centers to aid the influx of new applicants. The DMV has returned to regular office hours; 200 of the temporary employees will retain their jobs this year.
Ann Coil, Santa Ana Tea Party Patriots coordinator, told the Register, “It certainly overloads the system. And, again, we’re giving priority to people who aren’t citizens. There is concern in this country, and it’s reflected in this election, that there’s more compassion for people who are not citizens than those who are.”
DMV Director Jean Shiomoto said in a press release: “DMV committed to successfully implementing this new law to increase safety on California’s roads by putting licensed drivers behind the steering wheel. One year after AB 60 implementation there are 605,000 more drivers on the road who have passed all testing requirements and demonstrated their knowledge of California’s rules of the road.”
Ms. Siomoto sounds pleased that they have enabled these law breakers to obtain a drivers license, in spite of their illegal status. It is worth pointing out that no other nation on earth disrespects its own national borders and citizens to this degree.
The impact is hundreds of thousands more drivers on the road, and the citizens of California paying to staff the bureaucracy for a policy that the people did not want. The arrogance of government is stunning, and there should be some way to stop it.
But like the flood of illegals coming across the border, there seems little we can do to stop the growth and overreach of government. Almost a million new drivers licenses have been issued to illegal immigrants, without a pause wondering how that will impact others who are considering making the trip across the border. It is beyond explanation, beyond all reason.
