We can end most of the hate and violence in this country with drug legalization. People are going to do drugs regardless of laws. Making drugs illegal only makes them more glamorous and drives up the price. This causes the small percentage of people who cannot control themselves to lose everything and become desparate. This puts a lot of dollars in illegal dealers pockets thus creating other types of crime including large scale police corruption. I have come to understand that police shoot mostly out of fear. The main cause for police fear stems from illegal drug activity. When cops pull people over they do not know if they have a gun, are on drugs or might have enough drugs on them to put them in prison for 20 years. This makes for volitile and dangerous situations. In general people who experiment with drugs are not negatively effected. A small percentage have it in their DNA and cannot control themselves. Those people need prevention through awareness and rehabilitation. Arrest and incarceration only prolong and compound their issues. The solution is prevention through awareness and rehabilitation not through arrest and incarceration. I asked a girl from Peru if she did cocaine since they have tons of pure cocaine available for so cheap. She was offended and stated that most people in Peru do not do cocaine because it is bad for you.
