First, let’s look at the worst-case scenario for this asteroid and then see what else may be in store for civilization.
Make sure to check at the end of the page for further updates and information, as we learn more about this story.
1999 FN53 is traveling at around 30,000 mph, or about 50x that of a jumbo jet. The worst case scenario would be if the colossal rock hit the ocean.
According to Napier:
“All being well this one is far enough away not to do us any harm, but people are concerned because you just don’t know.”
If it were to strike the sea it would send a plume of halogen gasses into the stratosphere destroying the ozone layer, he said. He added: “This would allow unrestricted sunlight hit the Earth, the sky would heat up becoming strong enough to burn vegetation.“It would also put a lot of water into the stratosphere with these effects ultimately leading to a mass extinction.”

Although many consider this a ‘close call’, the reality is that there is no reason to panic. 1999 FN53 is not even on NASA’s Near Earth Objects risk table, which lists objects with impact probability as low as 1 in 9 million.
BUT, there is yet another gargantuan asteroid that will come even closer to Earth and is even larger than 1999 FN53.
What trouble can we expect from this even larger asteroid as soon as this summer? READ ON:
Hahahahaha oh Facebook…. I bet the sheeple will be freaking the $#%&!@* out over this
