Alleging Hacking in WI, MI, and PA, Group Demands Recount

This presidential election has had far more than its share of voting and balloting controversies.  While some turmoil is more or less expected, it’s important that the decision be seen as the result of accurate counting and a fair balloting process if the winner is to have legitimacy.  Recall the cloud of doubt that hung over the early months of the George W. Bush administration after his wafer-thin victory over Al Gore in 2000 and all the litigation that was involved in finally declaring a winner.  That sort of thing helps no one.

We have a clear winner this time, right?  Some don’t think so.

Hillary Clinton could have been robbed of the presidency by hackers, a group of experts claims – and now they’re calling for her to demand a recount.

The team, which includes voting rights experts and computer security buffs, says it has compelling evidence that Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania could have been hacked to artificially lower turnout.

They’re now pressuring the Clinton group to call for an independent recount that could swing the needle of the election in the Democrats’ favor, New York magazine reported.

The group presented their data to Clinton’s campaign chair, John Podesta, and general counsel Marc Elias, last Thursday, New York magazine said. But they haven’t yet persuaded the Clinton camp to demand an investigation.

If there were any chance that this could change the result to install Clinton as president, you would think Hillary would be all over it.  Nothing, yet.

The states in question are Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania.  If it were found that Clinton did win the popular vote in those states, she would have the electoral votes to be the next president instead of Donald Trump.

At present all the experts have is the suspicious drop in voters in counties with electronic polling – not direct proof of hacker intervention.

There’s also not much time left for the Clinton team to make their decision.

If they want to file a recount in Wisconsin the deadline is Friday. In Pennsylvania they have until Monday. And in Michigan the cut-off is November 30.

Experts would also have to examine the voting machines to see if there was evidence of hacking.

And according to New York magazine, the White House does not want the Clinton team to push for a recount, as it is trying to ensure a smooth transition between the Obama and Trump administrations.

Obama wants a smooth transition?  If true, that’s a switch.  Anyway, it doesn’t look like this hacking theory is going anywhere.

And this adds further support to the spurious nature of this hacking claim.

An effort by computer scientists and lawyers to pressure the Clinton campaign into pushing for an election recount in closely contested states over “hacked results” has been debunked before it even got off the ground.

As the NY Mag reports, “The group, which includes voting-rights attorney John Bonifaz and J. Alex Halderman, the director of the University of Michigan Center for Computer Security and Society, believes they’ve found persuasive evidence that results in Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania may have been manipulated or hacked.”

Despite conceding the election, the Clinton campaign is also very keen on hearing them out, with chairman John Podesta and campaign general counsel Marc Elias holding a conference call with the group last Thursday.

However, as pollster Nate Silver (hardly a fan of Trump) points out, the claims are already on thin ice.

The group claims that Clinton received 7 per cent fewer votes in counties that used electronic voting machines in comparison with those that used paper ballots and optical scanners.

But as Silver points out, “Michigan has paper ballots everywhere, so not even sure what claim is being made there.

As the Detroit News confirms, “Michigan uses paper ballots that are fed into scanning machines not connected to the internet,” eliminating any chance of “hacking”.

The story is made complete by Huma Abedin turning up again.

Meanwhile, Huma’s sister Heba Abedin is asking that people call the Department of Justice to demand an election audit.

“A shift of just 55,000 Trump votes to Hillary in PA, MI and WI is all that is needed to win,” she writes.

Hopefully, any pressure put on DOJ officials won’t include the death threats that electors are being bombarded with from Hillary supporters.

The election is over.  Hillary lost.  Nobody has to like that if they don’t want to, but it’s time to move forward, regardless of what Huma or her sister want.
