The Confederacy has long been a controversial topic in the United States. While the state has long been associated with racism and slavery, many modern southerners view the Confederacy as an important part of southern heritage.
Until recently, relics of the Confederate States of America have been allowed throughout the south for historical purposes, but in today’s politically correct climate, many of those monuments have been forcibly removed.
Last year, statues of Robert E. Lee, the commander of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia, were removed from locals parks in Virgina. The contractor who removed the statues found his Lamborghini torched in response.
Now, more statues of the former general are coming down across the state — at huge cost.

The reason this country is so divided is because we are failing to embrace the history of our nation and educate our youth about the founding of America, what being American stands for, and what a privilege it is to be American. Somewhere along the way we started identifying as African-American, Mexican-American, etc., when in truth if you were born in this country you are American and nothing else. Are we a country of immigrants? Yes, unless you are of native American descent, you came from a family of immigrants. Does that make you special in any way? No, it makes you among the majority of people living in this country. Was slavery a part of America’s early history? Yes, it was but it was not only black people who were slaves. White people came to this country as indentured slaves just like black people did. Each of us, regardless of race or ethnicity, has the same rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness that is afforded to us by the US Constitution. We learn from the lessons of the past. We need to embrace those lessons, not remove them from our history, so we can move forward and accomplish even more as a nation than we already have. Be proud of who you are, be respectful of your fellow man and of yourself, embrace your religious and spiritual beliefs, and let others do the same. Removing a statue, renaming a school or university, or removing religious symbols does not help us to understand one another. It only angers us and drives us further apart. Be tolerant of those whose life experiences are different than your own, whose cultural and religious beliefs are not your beliefs, whose skin color is not your skin color. Only then can we enjoy the freedoms and happiness our nation provides us.
So very sad, erasing history
That’s a dang shame! You cannot change history by pretending it never happened!
I will take the statue. It would sit in my front yard for all the world to see!
