Walmart has been installing facial recognition cameras at eye level in the entrances of their new store fronts for some time now. These cameras not only have the ability to cross reference you with social media networks to put a name with the face, but utilzes software that has the ability to ascertain a great many things about the environment. How much exactly is unknown, but in the video on the next page you can see that it not only tracks faces, but can categorize objects and motion.

It probably has more to do with loss prevention than anything else. It no doubt flags certain people to let them know when they are in the store. However, there is lots of potential for other uses (and abuse).

Most states have facial recognition systems in the drivers license cameras. Your photo is taken with a bio metric camera so your facial measurements are are ready on file with the government. You can thank 9/11 for all this
There are various reasons for facial recognition use, most I am sure have been cited, as I haven’t gone through the comments, but, consumer spending habits is the secondary purpose for it, as surveillance if the American public is the primary purpose, but if you feel that is bad, you would stop probably not like knowing what your favorite social media platforms do, for example, the new snapchat feature , no different, and it is actually providing a database reference for other systems.
