Socialism always starts as a “people’s movement,” with mindless and ignorant people being directed by elitist con men in the background, telling the foolish that by bringing down the “rich,” everyone will share in the abundance that socialism will bring. It is always a lie, and invariably almost all the people end up in poverty, with the exception of the top socialist leaders who live like kings. Fidel Castro is certainly one who has lived that life, and his protege, Hugo Chavez destroyed the Venezuelan economy pursuing the same socialist policies.
When the economy comes crashing down, it is necessary for the leadership to blame an outside source, and when Chavez was alive, he continually named the United States for all of the woes the country was suffering from. In fact, the oil rich country provides 9 percent of the U.S. gross oil imports, which must be a considerable sum of export income to the nation of 30 million people. As such, the U.S. provided a huge portion of the countries income, but Chavez resented that as well.
Venezuela has expropriated foreign and domestic businesses, which means that the people have little invested in the country and are becoming very unhappy with the leadership as it nosedives to complete economic ruin.

Your posts hold nothing in terms of facts. Why do countries like Denmark and Sweden have great economies and are generally happier than the US?

Thomas brennan.. Please review your “isms” before making snide comments. Democratic socialism is when production is controlled by the worker (no country actually is 100% democratic socialist). The only thing we have here that falls into this category is ESOPs and cooperative business models. What we actually have that would fall in the socialism category is social democracy which is the government regulation of capitalism to benefit the welfare state. If you read some of the writings from Karl Marx, Lenin, and Trotsky you will know what what is actually going on today. Marx advocated free trade because he knew it would redistribute wealth and destroy capitalism. Social democracy is just another tool used to collapse capitalism. When capitalism begins to fail then there’s workers revolution which will blame captialism for the economic downturn and they will also beg for socialism. Sound familiar so far? Once production is controlled by government (which is what socialism is) they have complete authoritarian rule over the country. There is a fine line between socialism and communism since they both fall under marxism. Fyi… Marx and Lenin said socialism was the gateway to the end goal of communism.
