The Utah Senate asked Congress to repeal the 17th Amendment, which was ratified under the Progressive’s of 1913. Utah has boldly challenged a system that was never the intent of the Founding Fathers and suggests that the 17th Amendment has resulted in Senators being bound to special interest groups, that donate enormous sums of money for the Senator’s re-election, and not representing the needs of the people of Utah.
The bill’s sponsor, Sen. Al Jackson of Utah, believes that Senators need to “come home every weekend and take direction from their state legislative (sic) body and from the House and the Governor on how they should vote in the upcoming week.”
Passing with 20-6 SJR2 was sent to the House. It demands that Congress repeal the 17th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.
Read a history of the 17th Amendment and why Utah has made such a bold call to action on the following page.
So what he’s saying is that the people are too stupid to realize that they are being manipulated by corporations? or the fact that the popular vote has NO weight anyway. Only the electoral votes matter.
I’ve been saying this for years. The Founders set up the Constitution where the States would control the most powerful side of the Congress. Having the State legislatures electing Senators was intended to prevent the Federal government from becoming too strong and it worked. Do you think all the unfounded mandates passed by Congress would have become law if the Senators jobs were dependent on the very legislators who were expected to raise taxes, and the ire of their constituents, to pay for them? Not a chance. That’s why Progressives pushed to add the 17th amendment. They argued it was the people’s right to vote for their Senators, but in truth it was simply a power transfer from the States to the Federal government. And not coincidentally, our Federal deficit began to increase exponentially shortly thereafter.
It sounds like the politicians want to take our voting rights from us. BIG SURPRISE!!!!
click bait facebook article.
Congress and the Senate have no idea what’s going on in their states they are to worried about money they want!!
Yes, Repeal the 17th amendment and send the Senate back to the states. Now senators represent only themselves, financed mostly from out of state, have a 6yea fundraising head start and it’s been bad for America.
Give your citation, please, where the 1st ten amendments cannot be touched. And your numbers are wrong. It is 2/3 of the house, 2/3 of the Senate, and 3/4 of the states legislatures. Or 2/3 of the states may call a convention.
